Magna Carta at Beckenham Word Fest

2015 was the 800th Anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta

This has given me – as Historical Interpretation Simon – the opportunity to write and perform another tale of the common man who sees at first hand the major events in history.

When so many people these days have smart phones and iPads to write their notes on, it was entertaining to talk about tablets of a different sort; the thirteenth century slate tablets and vellum scrolls.

The Magna Carta has seen me performing at some amazing and varied events this year. All stick in the mind for different reasons, but one of the outstanding ones was that at Beckenham Word Fest, in July.

One of our local schools, Harris Academy, Beckenham, had the idea to celebrate words in the community.

“Our festival of all things literary will comprise a celebration of the written and spoken word, from the Alice in Wonderland tent to a poetry slam on the main stage. We have worked with our local community to produce a Heritage Recipe Book, a Quotation Quilt and expect some fabulous entries to our Edible Book Competition. Our festival will celebrate our WORD work with our local community and will provide you with the most memorable event ever witnessed in Beckenham town centre! WORDfest hosts an eclectic mix of sounds and spoken-word, there is something for everyone from brass to folk, from theatre to hip hop! Venture forth among the hay bales and delight in a feast for your ears! “

The school took over Beckenham town green for the day so all the community could enjoy the free entertainment. This included not just Historical Interpretation, but other local talent – writers, poets and singers, including Britain’s Eurovision Song Contest competitor, Bianca Richards.

There were 10 performance spaces and 35 different events.

The whole Wordfest event buzzed

It was the enthusiasm of the staff and pupils who created, managed and hosted the event that makes this stand out in my mind.

Academies seem to get a bad press for a variety of reasons. This is a shame because this one deserves heaps of praise!

My hat goes off to all the teachers and pupils who created and managed the event. I’m looking forward to Wordfest 2016 already, with a different performance from Historical Interpretation.
